Wellness Wednesday… Food = Medicine

Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”  Have you heard this before?  We can thank Hippocrates for this famous quote.  He was way ahead of his time when he advised people to prevent and treat diseases first and foremost by eating a nutrient-dense diet.  Oh, and did I mentioned this was around the year 400 B.C.?

This Wednesday we begin a new summer series called Food = Medicine.  Each week we’ll look at one food that really does act as medicine.  Before we get to these specific foods, though, let’s look a little bit more about what we mean by “food equals medicine.”

fit-fathers-juicing-imageDid you realize that the foods you eat on a regular basis help determine whether or not you will become ill or remain healthy into older age?  Yes, food really is that powerful! Nutrient deficiencies and toxicity from a poor diet are linked to nearly all modern health conditions.  John Hopkins University reports that some 80 percent of cancer patients are believed to be malnourished, and you probably already know that diabetes and heart disease are illnesses that are highly influenced by your diet.  The same can be said for allergies, autoimmune disorders like arthritis, thyroid disorders, and many more.

This expanding field specifically studies how food influences gene expressions and contributes to either health and longevity or to disease and early death. One of the key point of nutrigenomics is that nutrient deficiencies and toxic chemicals in low-quality foods have an effect of human gene expression. Isn’t that wild? The foods you eat can affect your genes! Again, I say, “food really is that powerful!”

So, how do these medicinal foods protect against disease and help slow the aging process? Let’s look:

  • Decreasing and Controlling Inflammation
  • Balancing Hormones
  • Alkalizing the Body
  • Balancing Blood Sugar
  • Detoxifying and Eliminating Toxins
  • Improving Absorption of Nutrients
